Types of dental implants

Plate form inserts, root form implant and subperiosteal implants make up the different categories of implants. These implants are divided into two basic categories, those that are placed into the bone and those that rest on top of the bone.

The root form implant that is cylindrical or screw type shaped is the most widely used design and is generally placed where there is plentiful width and depth of jawbone, it has a surface area designed to promote good attachment to the bone. Where the jawbone is too narrow or short for immediate placement of root form implants the area may be enhanced with bone grafting to allow for their placement.

There are patients who do not have enough bone and gum tissue but do not meet the criteria of bone grafting; a special narrow implant called a plate form is placed into the bone. In cases where the jaw bone is too short or narrow and unsuitable for bone grafting, the Plate form implants are used instead of root form implants. In this method a long and flat implant is fixed into the short or small jawbone.

In cases of advanced bone loss, the subperiosteal implants, may be prescribed, this type of implant rests on top of the bone but under the gums. Root form implants are considered to be the closest in size and shape when compared with the root of the original tooth. They are mostly used in deep and wide jaw bones that provide a wide base for replacing one or more teeth

In extreme conditions where there has been a huge damage and the jaw bone is not sufficiently wide or deep for the plate form or root form implant, subperiosteal implants can be used. This type of implant is custom made and designed to sit on top of the bone, but under the gums. There are two types of placement methods for this type of implant, a single surgery or a dual surgery. The type of placement method will be decided upon in consultation with your oral surgeon during the first appointment.

After the evaluation has been carried out, your dentist will help you determine the appropriate type of dental implants to suit your needs; this is done during the first appointment to the dentist.
